SSAW's programmes at masters and undergraduate levels provide advanced education
structured around the needs of the UK film industry and offer clear entry
paths into the sector. We are one of the seven Skillset Screen Academies™ across the UK. The Skillset Screen Academy
Wales is funded by the UK Film Council
through Skillset and HEFCW.
The SSAW is a partnership of two of the foremost film educational institutions in Wales. It also draws on the resources of other key centres of excellence in film-related vocational training and education. SSAW contributes to the cultural, social and economic development of the UK film sector and to the competitiveness of UK film on a global scale by offering a focused set of vocational courses and degrees to a diverse student body.
The education and training SSAW offers is closely linked to the realities of the film industry. Our core teaching modules provide information about the way the film industry functions and we maintain a range of masterclasses, internship, mentoring and professional development schemes. Building upon expertise in the area of online learning, SSAW maximises students' skills development opportunities through the use of the latest technological solutions. The Academy also provides assisted entry into the film industry by means of a unique post graduation facility and placement service . The fostering of diversity through developing and adapting bursaries and outreach activities to the specific needs of the sector is also at the heart of SSAW activity.
Over the first two years of the SSAW project (2005-2007), £1.3 million was invested in the following ways:
- film training initiatives
- mentoring schemes for students, graduates and staff
- curriculum development
- practitioners in residence
- enhanced placements
- new learning resources
- a summer lab
Substantial bursaries are available to encourage people from diverse backgrounds to study at SSAW institutions, to attend film festivals and events and to produce excellent portfolios of work.
