Steven Ball is a time-based media artist.  He has worked in film, video, sound and installation since the early 1980s.  In the late 1980s he accidentally migrated to Melbourne, Australia.  There he continued his practice making a number of film, video, sound and installation works, as well as being engaged in various arts activist, curatorial, administrative, teaching and writing activities.  Since returning to the UK in 2000 he has worked predominantly with digital video, producing a series of works, which among other things, are particularly concerned with digital material processes and spatial representation.  He is currently Research Fellow at the British Artists' Film and Video Study Collection, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.

"Using Super-8 as a visual artist with both aesthetic and philosophical/ideological concerns, Steven has produced a body of work over the last few years that goes beyond conventional avant-garde practice in that it not only fractures and critiques traditional metaphysical views of the world, but it then pieces together its fractures in totalizing ways, even if the totalizations are sometimes ironic."
Bill Mousoulis, "The Ball Bounces...", Melbourne Super 8 Film Group Newsletter, Issue 92
