India, 2005, 55 minutes, subtitles
Taking as a starting point 'the Sari Stampede' - where a politician distributing free saris during the election period resulted in a stampede where many women died - this then moves more broadly to the dreadful conditions in which the women who were involved live, without access to clean water or toilets.
Smriti Nevatia has worked as researcher, scriptwriter and occasional director on a wide variety of TV shows as well as documentaries. She was associate director on City of Photos and co-director on 6 Yards to Democracy. She recently wrote the dialogue for a play by sex workers about their lives, and has been working on a feature film script.
