Mentoring & Residencies
Mentoring
On SSAW courses experienced mentors are used throughout the education and
training process, but most specifically during students' experiences of
actual production within a professional context. The advice of highly experienced
industry practitioners can be an invaluable resource for students at any
stage of their careers.
Mentoring has provided MA and BAstudents with coaching from
experienced makers of short films who covered all stages of film making
from pre-production to delivery. Mentors were also invited to speak to students
about acting, producing and a wide range of other skills. In addition to
working with mentors, SSAW students receive careers advice and one-to-one
guidance through the Skillset Cymru Careers service.
SSAW is currently looking for industry mentors accross our 8 specialisms. If you are interested in finding out more please contact Hannah Raybould .
Residencies
Artists in residence are also brought into the learning environment at
the SSAW, thus allowing students to work closely with industry professionals
on specific projects for periods of two to four weeks.
Successful residencies were held in 2006-9 with animators Leigh Hodgkinson Lucca Pauli, Matt Walker and Ian Richardson as well as Larry Mitchell, the digital media artist and producer from Florida.
The AIR scheme in Newport has produced award winning films every year. For further details on the scheme click here
We have also held residencies with Mike Bradsell (editing), Vladimir Bouchler (acting for the screen / directing actors), Roger Stennett (screenwriting), Matt Leonard (CGI) and Ken Russell (directing).
Summer/Easter film labs
SSAW has coordinated labs with local production companies and has offered opportunities for between 10 and 25 students to collaborate with experienced Heads of Department on the creation of short films, professionally produced through to festival distribution. The films created (if you want to see them!) are Colonial Gods, Birdwatching, Muse, Nice Beaches and Calorie.
