(written by Amber Barlow, BA student at University of Glamorgan)
THE editor of award winning show Band of Brothers joined other big names in the film industry on October 18th to give talks to budding film makers.
The event held at Cardiff Cineworld cinema boasted experts from several areas of the film industry from directors to set designers, speaking to students who showed a keen and professional interest in the question time at the end of the hour long Industry Masterclass.
John Richards, a feature film and TV drama editor was one of those offering advice, with a number of achievements under his belt including upcoming film ‘Plot with a View’, starring Lee Evans and Naomi Watts among others.
Hosted by Skillset Screen Academy Wales, the turnout was impressive - seeing students from Glamorgan University, Newport's International Film School, Swansea’s Metropolitan University and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with students at BA and MA level.
An attendee from Glamorgan University, said: “It was an informative and enjoyable evening and a great opportunity for talents to come together and talk about future projects”.
Films were shown from the best graduates from 2006 and 2007 in animation and live action and there was a networking reception afterwards at the cinema's bar, with free wine to get people talking about collaborations and a shared interest of film making, and even a chance to mingle with the experts.
“This was the first ever networking event that the Screen Academy Wales has held to welcome new and returning students and all the feedback showed that it was a great success,” said Hannah Raybould, Project Manager of SSAW. “We organised the event to make students aware of the advantages of being part of a unique network within Wales and within the UK – and all the benefits of being Screen Academy students, such as placements and bursaries…I think it definitely merits becoming an annual event!”
