Please find below the first events in our spring term free screening programme.  The programme is designed for our students on the MA Filmmaking and Screenwriting courses, but we have a limited allocation of free places for industry guests and those interested in studying at LFS.

Screenings start at 5.30pm, followed by Q & A and then networking drinks.

Monday 28th January - EDITING WITH TONY LAWSON

Screening of Bad Timing (Dir Nicolas Roeg, 123 mins, UK 1980) followed by Q & A with editor Tony Lawson (The End of The Affair, Michael Collins, Straw Dogs), regular Roeg collaborator.,

Thurs 31st January - DOCUMENTARY WITH MARC ISAACS

Preview screening of All White in Barking (73mins 2007 UK) followed by Q & A with director Marc Isaacs

"Incisive, surprisingly upbeat docu weaves together stories of assorted residents living in the rundown Blighty burg of the title, where fast rising immigration has coincided with a far-right backlash. Experienced doc-helmer Marc Isaacs ("Calais: The Last Border") refrains from demonizing, and instead crafts a communal portrait infused with compassion." Variety

Tues 5th Feb - DISTRIBUTION WITH JANE GILES

Preview screening of I'm A Cyborg (Dir: Park Chan-Wook, 105 mins, 2006 South Korea) followed by Q & A with Jane Giles, Head of Acquisitions at Tartan Films.

"madcap fantasy from the inimitable director of Lady Vengeance and Old Boy.. with extraordinary visual ideas (hold on for the airborne Alpine yodelling sequence) and lovely performances from two of South Korea's most revered pop culture icons." (EIFF)

Thurs 7th Feb - DIRECTING WITH NICOLAS ROEG 

In conversation with Nicolas Roeg (Bad Timing, Don't Look Now, Walkabout, Performance)

followed by a preview screening of Puffball (120 mins 2007 UK/Ireland/Canada)

An adaptation of Fay Weldon's novel starring Miranda Richardson, Rita Tushingham, Kelly Reilly and Donald Sutherland,

Tues 12th Feb - DIRECTING WITH SARAH GAVRON

Screening of Brick Lane (101 mins 2007 UK ), followed by Q & A with director Sarah Gavron

"a sensitive and intelligent adaptation of Monica Ali's novel. * * * *    Empire

Before "Brick Lane", we will also be showing a Roundhouse/Rise Phoenix education project These Days We Wear Jeans (15mins, 2007, UK), a documentary film created by teenage girls from Kings Cross.  Sarah Gavron led a masterclass with them when they were preparing the film. 

Tues 26th Feb - DIRECTING/EDITING WITH MOUFLIDA TLATI

Screening of The Silences of the Palace (120mins France/Tunisia) 1994 followed by Q & A with director/editor Mouflida Tlatli

"A coming of age tale set in the Kings Palace at the end of the French colonial rule in Tunisia, at a time when the female servants were expected to be sexually available to the men they served. . a fascinating and accomplished first feature" New York Times

Thurs 28th Feb - 'MUMBLECORE' WITH ANDREW REED

Screening of Quiet City (Dir Aaron Katz 78mins 2007) followed by Q&A with cinematographer Andrew Reed

"Quiet City" belongs to the movie genre labeled mumblecore, a filmmaking sensibility filtered through Jean-Luc Godard and John Cassavetes..  with its minimalist aesthetics, minuscule budgets, home-movie casting of friends and acquaintances and its fly-on-the-wall, quasi-documentary spontaneity. Tender and sad, it is a fully realized work of mumblecore poetry." New York Times
