Post Graduation Facility Update – Cohort 1 ends on a high!

As the first PGF cohort comes to an end on Friday 4 December, we take a look at the placements and courses that have enabled the trainees to identify where their interests really lie, and whether their ideals roles are actually suited to them.  Some have confirmed their dreams, other have changed direction.

Daniel Wheatley, Assistant Location Manager Trainee.

  • ‘Dagenham Girls’ – feature film – assisting Unit Manager
  • ‘Clash of the Titans’ – feature film – assisting Locations Team
  • ‘First Aid in the Workplace’ course
  • Wales Screen Commission South West – assisting the Locations Manager
  • Wales Screen Commission South East – assisting the Locations Manager
  • ‘The Royal Wedding’ - Tiger Aspect/BBC drama – assisting the Locations Team
  • SSAW – Location Manager for NCDT Weekend project

Elliot Hale, Lighting Assistant Trainee.

  • ‘Crash’ – BBC Drama – assisting the lighting team
  • Goleudy – assisting the lighting/electrical company working on live broadcasts from party political conferences
  • ‘Ironclad’ – feature film – Video Assistant (Elliot felt that his heart was not in the electrical/lighting department and that he wants to pursue a career as a technical assistant in the camera department)

Catherine Tarran, Sound Assistant Trainee

  • Cranc - sound post-production house
  • Visual Impact – facilities hire company
  • BBC Health and Safety course
  • Introduction to Pro Tools course
  • Location Sound course

James Khan, Camera Trainee

  • ‘Dagenham Girls’ – feature film – assisting the camera team
  • ‘Statue of Liberty’ – short film – assisting the DoP
  • ‘Four Working Days’ – feature film pilot – camera assistant / clapper loader
  • BBC Health and Safety course
  • First Aid in the Workplace course 
  • ‘Merlin’ – BBC Drama – assisting the camera team
  • ‘The Royal Wedding’ - Tiger Aspect/BBC drama - assisting the camera team
  • ‘Ironclad’ – feature film - assisting the camera teams

Andrew Trace, Camera Trainee

  • ‘Crash’ – BBC Drama -  assisting the camera team
  • ‘The Royal Wedding’ -  Tiger Aspect/BBC drama - assisting the camera team
  • 16mm/35mm Camera Familiarisation course – NFTS, Beaconsfield
  • ‘Wild at Heart’ – ITV (South Africa) – assisting the main camera teams as well as shooting his own behind the scenes pieces for the EPK.


Forthcoming dates and recruitment numbers for the PGF scheme are as follows:

Cohort 2 : 11th January 2010 – 13th May 2010 – 10 trainees
Cohort 3 : 12th April 2010 – 13th August 2010 – 9 trainees
Cohort 4 : 9th August 2010 – 10th December 2010 – 10 trainees

Skillset Screen Academy Wales are sad to say farewell to Rhian Brewster, the PGF Training Coordinator who left the post in November.  However, the PGF scheme is in the very safe hands of SSAW’s Alex Leadley, who will continue her role as Placements Coordinator whilst also taking the reins of the PGF.

PGF Cohort 2 will be underway in early January, following a series of interviews that took place in November. Recruitment for Cohort 3 will begin at the end of January 2010.
