Spanish film placement is a win-win for SSAW students and director!
High in the mountains, looking out over the epic wilderness of the Tabernas desert, five students from Screen Academy Wales followed in the footsteps of cinema’s greatest Spaghetti Westerns as they helped film ‘Gravity Makes us Fall’, a short film by director, William Ben Jones.
During an exciting week-long placement, Rhiannon Tate (UWN), Ben Spiro Hughes (UWN), Emanuella Lorenzone (CCI_, Holly Withers (CCI) and Dale Jorden Johnson (CCI), took on a range of responsibilities alongside professional crew on location in the famous Spanish desert.
The trainees were selected from a group of applicants to take up the roles of grip, camera, art department and trainee AD.
Rhiannon Tate explained: “This was a brilliant opportunity and really valuable work experience for me. I’ve always got a great deal out of SSAW opportunities and this one seemed like a particularly exciting placement.
“I definitely picked up new skills and my awareness of grip and camera equipment has increased dramatically. I wouldn’t feel out of depth on another shoot after this.”
The five trainees made a fantastic impression on Director William Jones, who described them as a real pleasure to work with. He said: “Their work ethic, commitment and demeanour was admirable from the first setup to the last.
It couldn’t have worked out better with SSAW. I believe it was a real win-win situation. From the get-go the team were responsive and pro-active, and what they said we’d get, they delivered. This is a terrific programme and I’m sure we’ll be coming back to it many times in the future.”
