Ffresh and Skillset Screen Academy Wales present

PITCH TO WIN 2008

Pitch to Win returns to Ffresh and this time it’s personal!

Actually, it’s a multiplatform project aimed at the youth demographic but that doesn’t sound as catchy or tough.

The ability to pitch your idea is one of the most important skills you’ll need to develop in order to secure funding for your ideas and fulfil your potential. Following the success of the inaugural Pitch to Win in 2007, the Pitch to Win session at Ffresh will offer you an invaluable insight into how to develop and sell your project and experience the thrill of pitching.

So how does it work?
You must submit a ONE PAGE outline of an original idea than must be suitable for multi-platform development and aimed at the 16 – 24 demographic - undoubtedly the most highly sought after age range in the global market. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, January 16th.

Before you say what the hell is multiplatform development!! Take a deep breath and read the following…

Multi-platform development involves a concept that works across more than one platform. It might be a TV programme which has an associated online community; it might start with a Podcast which then feeds into a TV programme. Additional platforms include mobile content, interactive games and other formats. All submitted briefs must be original concepts! Ideas or concepts geared toward innovative use of your chosen media will also increase your chances of selection.

You must submit your one page outline by JANUARY 16th. For help writing your one page outline, please refer to the Pitch to Win Guide.

All the briefs will then be submitted to a panel of industry professionals, who will give you feedback on your idea during the Pitch to Win Session on Friday, February 15th as part of Ffresh – the Student Moving Image Festival of Wales – 2008/

After the session, where you will be given 5 minutes with each specialist industry advisor, the panel will choose three students (or student pairs – see rules and regulations) with the strongest ideas or concepts who will then be invited to a session later that day to pitch their idea to the festival audience. At the end the panel will choose one student with the strongest pitch. The winner will receive:

  • A place on the Nesta Insight Out Course (where you’ll get the chance to pitch for up to £5,000 worth of start-up support)

  • One to one advice and mentoring from industry professionals
  • £500 to spend on training courses of the winner’s choice (courtesy of Skillset Cymru)
  • A bursary of £150 to attend a UK film festival of the winner’s choice (courtesy of  Screen Academy Wales)

The winners of the Pitch to Win 2007 were Laurence Hall and Alasdair Davies from the University of Wales Lampeter for their project The Great Primate Handshake. Both Laurence and Alasdair will be attending the 2008 event to tell the festival audience about how they’ve progressed with their project.

Conditions and Regulations:

  • To be eligible all entrants must be able to attend the Screen Academy Wales Pitching Session held during the Ffresh festival on February 15th at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre.
  • The brief must be no longer than ONE page and must be submitted electronically by Wednesday, January 16th to james@ffresh.com or posted to Ffresh, c/o The Festivals Company, Tŷ Cefn, Rectory Road, Cardiff, CF5 1QL. No entries will be accepted after this January 16th.
  • Concepts must be the sole creative property of the entrant.

  • As a number of the panel do not speak Welsh, briefs must be submitted in English only.
  • The three students selected to pitch their idea to the panel during the second session at Ffresh will be limited to five minutes each. The finalist's pitch presentations will be followed by a round of questions from the panel. The panel’s decision is final.
  • Ideas may be submitted by individuals only or groups of no more than 2.
  • Ffresh and Screen Academy Wales will have the right to promote their involvement with the Pitching Session and will have limited access for promotional purposes to the concept or idea of the three finalists.
