Our work placement
co-ordinator Alex Leadley offers support for students looking to gain experience in their chosen field while still on their course, and for post-graduates who are looking for their first roles in the industry.
SSAW aims to:
- find graduates their first professional roles in the industry, whether paid long term placements or short (up to 5 day) unpaid opportunities
- arrange work experience placements on small community or corporate projects, films, drama, work with production companies (animation and film) supporting aritst roles for our acting students
- provide careers advice and guidance
- work alongside the Post Graduation Facility to co-ordinate placements
The work placement service will also keep students informed about relevant
job opportunities and events after they graduate and will track their progress
as they advance through various roles within the industry.
Our latest tracking project showed that 70% of our graduates since 2005 are working in the industry or are on further training courses.
To date, SSAW students have worked on productions that range from short films to feature-length dramas in trainee capacities that include the following:
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd assistant directors
- boom and trainee sound recordist
- post-production sound trainees
- camera and video assistants
- post production assistants
- electricians
- stand by props and art department trainees
- make up and costume trainees
- runners
- location trainees
- production co-ordinator trainees
- continuity
- junior animators
Many students who have taken part in co-ordinated work experience have been subsequently selected to work on further features and TV dramas.
SSAW is working closely with Skillset, Creative Business Wales, The Film Agency for Wales and the IP Fund as well as Go Wales to encourage production companies to take on paid trainees for taster opportunities and work experience placements of up to four months across all areas of film production. The work placement co-ordinator is collaborating with Wales' leading production companies to ensure a high quality, relevant placement scheme for SSAW graduates.
