SSAW's placement facility has been developed by CYFLE. Our work placement
co-ordinator offers support for graduates and postgraduates in the difficult
phase of moving on from their studies and entering the film industry. The
co-ordinator aims to:
- find graduates their first professional roles in the industry, whether paid or unpaid;
- arrange work experience placements on small community or corporate projects; and
- provide careers advice and guidance to staff and peers.
The work placement service will also keep students informed about relevant job opportunities and events after they graduate and will track their progress as they advance through various roles within the industry
To date, SSAW students have worked on productions that range from short films to feature-length dramas in trainee capacities that include the following:
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd assistant directors
- boom and post-production sound
- camera and video assistants
- editor
- electrician
- props, costume and set dresser
- runner
- location manager
- production manager and co-ordinator
- continuity
- actors
- animators
Many students who have taken part in co-ordinated work experience have been subsequently selected to work on further features and TV dramas.
SSAW is working closely with Skillset and Go Wales to encourage production companies to take on paid trainees for taster opportunities and work experience placements of up to four months across all areas of film production. The work placement co-ordinator is collaborating with Wales' leading production companies to ensure a high quality, relevant placement scheme for SSAW graduates.
Welsh training database
SSAW is working closely with the Creative Industries Hub, The Film Agency for Wales and the IP Fund to manage a joint database of training opportunities for young people in Wales. The collaboration will ensure that SSAW students are available for recruitment as trainees on National Lottery and IP Fund supported features, as well as for incoming productions supported by the Wales Screen Commission.
Midwinter Movies
In 2006 the SSAW joined forces once again with Skillset and ITV Wales Drama to co-ordinate the Midwinter Movies scheme. The scheme will produce three films for screening on ITV Wales. It offered 14 students the opportunity to work as crew on the films, with pre-production and on-set training and mentoring by experienced professional heads of department. More details soon on Midwinter Movies 2007.
