Pre-entry postgraduate bursaries
One of SSAW's core remits is to encourage wider support throughout UK for the aim of the UK Film Council and Skillset to deliver a more diverse film workforce. Members of under-represented groups are encouraged to follow SSAW courses through outreach activity and the provision of bursaries for study. Bursaries are funded by the Skillset Film Skills Fund.
SSAW will be offering bursaries for September 2009/January 2010 entry.
Bursary application packs will be sent to all those offered places on the eligible courses in July 2009.
If you would like further information please contact Hannah Raybould on 02920 480141 or email Hannah.
CRITERIA
To be considered for a bursary award applicants must meet the following three criteria:
- Applicants must demonstrate a financial need for a bursary having taken advantage of all sources of funding available. You should therefore apply for the maximum amount available to you through any appropriate postgraduate study loan. The SSAW Bursary Panel will assume that you are in receipt of this unless you can provide evidence that your application was declined or that you are not eligible. A SSAW bursary is not intended to be an alternative to a postgraduate study loan.
For further information about sources of funding available for postgraduate students including postgraduate study loans please contact Student Services at the institution where you are planning to study.
- Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to working in and contributing to the UK film industry after completing their studies. Priority will be given to applicants who intend to work in shortage areas within the UK film industry.
- Applicants must be UK residents (see ‘Eligibility’ section in guidance notes below).
SUPPORT AVAILABLE
SSAW has a total bursary fund of £40,000 to offer for the academic year 2009-2010.
The SSAW Bursary Panel will assess all applicants against the criteria listed above and will determine the number, type and amounts of bursaries awarded.
The maximum amount of an individual bursary will be £10,000.
There are three types of bursary available: tuition fee bursaries; course related costs bursaries: and combined bursaries for tuition fees and course related costs. These are available for all courses listed above except the online MA Film Producing and Business Management course for which only tuition fee bursaries are available.
Tuition fee bursaries will be paid directly to the relevant institution when they fall due.
Course-related cost bursaries will be paid in instalments during the course in October and February for full-time students. They will be paid on a pro-rata basis to part-time students. Course-related cost bursaries can be used for childcare costs.
If you are awarded a bursary, it will be paid on the basis that you continue to be enrolled on your chosen SSAW course, that any tuition fees due have been paid and that you have satisfactorily completed all modules undertaken up to that time.
Bursary recipients agree to be ‘tracked’ by SSAW and provide information on any film-related activities (including awards, festival successes, employment and further training) as requested by them for up to 12 months after graduation.
Recipients who withdraw from, or fail, their course will receive no further funding from SSAW and may be asked to repay all or part of the monies received.
